Awesome Things

2012 has gotten off to quite a rocky start. My brother was diagnosed with melanoma and the first month was spent not having any idea how bad it was. We now know it is Stage III, and that with a rough year of treatment, he should make it out the other side.

During this time of stress, I remembered the TED talk the 3 A’s of Awesome by the author of the blog 1000 awesome things. Neil Pasricha started the blog 1000 awesome things after going through an especially difficult time in his life. This has inspired me to look for the little good things in every day as my own personal exercise of noticing the good in each day. I can’t guarantee that I’ll update daily, but I’m going to try.

Awesomeness of 2.16.12:

1. TV shows that make you laugh. Every once in a while I can be a couch potato, but I don’t have TV. Thank Hulu for bringing me shows like Modern Family and Happy Endings that make me giggle.

2. The snooze button. Because seriously, who rolls right out of bed when the alarm goes off?

3. Hearing from friends far away. Lizzylizzylizzy is coming for a visit. Plus, she sends me updates from our old watering hole, The Saloon in Oakland (actually called Merchant’s, but that never caught on with us).

No Shoes, No Same-Sex Marriage, No Service of the Day: New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez will have find a new place to get her hair did after her openly gay stylist refused to allow her back in his salon until she changes her stance on same-sex marriage.

“The governor’s aides called not too long ago, wanting another appointment to come in,” Antonio Darden, owner of a popular hair studio in Santa Fe, told KOB Eyewitness News. “Because of her stances and her views on this I told her aides no. They called the next day, asking if I’d changed my mind about taking the governor in and I said no again.”

Darden, who has been with his partner for 15 years, took issue with Gov. Martinez’s statement that marriage should be restricted to one man and one woman.

“I think it’s just equality, dignity for everyone,” said Darden. “I think everybody should be allowed the right to be together.”
